GIL FELT HE NEEDED a dose of strong liquor, after the goodbyes were said.

He knew what he would do. He’d never been more certain.

He would call up his old friend.

He would call up Van Alsten, and they would go have a drink.

VULTURE

TOM CAME OVER crowing the news: his mother had done it! She did it! She was great!

Gil agreed, she was great. But how, in this case?

She had talked to the homeowners’ association. It had changed the rules. “Youth” were allowed to skateboard in cul-de-sacs now. If they were supervised.

“For real?” said Gil.

“I swear!”

“Strong. Very strong.”

“I’m sorry about your friend,” said Tom, sobering. “My dad told me. He said he wasn’t even old. And that he was just trying to help someone. It’s really sad.”

“Well,” said Gil. “Yes. Thank you.”

It touched him. A small boy’s condolences.

He said he’d like to see Tom’s neck.

“Oh. It’s all good.” Tom bent forward, obliging.

The punctures had healed.

“And nothing else happened? He’s leaving you alone?”

“He doesn’t take the bus anymore,” said Tom. “He gets driven.”

You could do so much with so little. At times.

Other times, with all the privilege there was, nothing.
